Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness - BWCAW
weedy and rocky shoreline in Boundary Waters
Boating

There's no getting around it. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is a sensational area for those seeking a boating experience in a large chunk of wild backcountry. There are over 1,000 lakes and streams, comprising 190,000 acres of surface water within the 1 million acre BWCAW! Within that system, there are 1,200 miles of fantastic canoe routes which could take a lifetime to properly explore. Over 75% of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is motor free, leaving ample opportunities for those who wish to avoid motors and for those who wish to use a motorized boat. Motorized areas are usually found in the large border lakes such as Snowbank and Moose.

We've assembled a few entry point lakes for you along the Fernberg Road in the BWCAW so you can get a feel for the kind of experience you are striving for. We will be adding more in the future, but for now focusing on the most popular section of the BWCAW.

Moose Lake
Ojibway Lake
Snowbank Lake
Tofte Lake/Wood Lake

Most people don't have canoes. There are numerous places around Ely in which you can rent canoes, some with better prices and service than others. We are currently working with several area outfitters to provide Parkcamper discounts to those who rent gear and canoes through this site. A note will be posted here and in the lodging section once this is done.

Please remember that boating can be dangerous. There are numerous risks such as lightning, wind storms, drowning, rapids, hidden reefs and so forth. Routes should be carefully planned using detailed topographic maps. If you aren't used to canoeing, definitely get some practice in before setting out into a rugged wilderness like the BWCAW. Always wear a life jacket when on the water.

Some useful items for Boundary Waters boating such as kayaks, life vests, sunglasses, camp chairs and other items can be found at our partner site.
