In order to keep the BWCAW a great experience for everyone, there is a fairly long list of rules in place.

 

1. You must enter the BWCAW on the date and location contained on your permit.
2. Permits and stubs become invalid when the trip leader leaves the wilderness.
3. 9 people and 4 watercraft are the maximum amount of people allowed in one group in the BWCAW.
4. Use latrines at designated campsites.
5. Do not use the latrines for garbage.
6. If not near a latrine, dig hole 8 inches deep, 150 feet from water and bury with dirt and leaves.
7. Bathe and wash dishes 150 feet from water.
8. Cans and glass bottles are not permitted in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Use plastic bins and plastic bags and prepack your food before your trip.
9. Dispose of any fish remains by walking well away from any campsites or portages.
10. Fires are allowed in steel grates at campsites unless otherwise notified.
11. Bring a camp stove. They are easier to use than fires for cooking.
12. Only collect down and dead wood for fires, and try to do so away from campsites and trails to minimize impact.
13. Only use wood from the local area.
14. Cutting live vegetation is illegal.
15. Put out your fire completely with water.
16. Burning trash in the BWCAW is illegal.
17. Camp only at designated Forest Service campsites.
18. Maximum stay time at campsite is 14 days.
19. All members of permit group are confined to one campsite.
20. Leave no trace when camping, leave the site better than you found it.
21. All personal property must be carried out with you at the end of your trip.
22. Please do not disturb historical and archeological sites.
23. Metal detectors are prohibited.
24. Please keep control of your dog at all times.
25. Dispose of dog waste 150 feet away from water, trails, portages and campsites.
26. Fireworks are illegal.
27. Do not discharge a gun within 150 yards of campsites, occupied areas or in a manner that places people or their property at risk.
28. Motor boats are allowed on designated routes only.
29. Motors may not be used or in possession on any paddle-only lake.
30. Portage wheels or other mechanized assistance are only allowed at designated portage areas.
