Fall Lake is a medium sized campground that was recently reworked
in 2004. Fall Lake is a very impressive body of water offering
endless water based recreation for the whole family, the main
reason why it's such a popular camping location. This is the main
drive-in campground for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness,
and also serves as entry point # 24 for the BWCAW, with 14 entry
permits granted per day from May 1to to September 30. The campground
itself offers modern restrooms, water, a small store, and most
of the sites have electricity. This campground seems to be a hotspot
for bald eagles in the fall. Most of Fall Lake is open boating.
The northern end requires a wilderness permit and a maximum 25hp
motor. This isn't a problem however due to the fact that Fall
Lake is over 2,258 acres!
Because of its location, Fall Lake can be incredibly popular
during peak times such as July and August. In the fall it's incredibly
quiet and pretty much empty.
Those looking for a quiet campground will have good luck with
Fall Lake in late autumn, although some of the services like the
camp store will not be operating. That's the price you pay for
solitude.
