The northeastern area of Minnesota offers a rather splendid outdoor
landscape full of deep forests and many lakes. The most scenic
part of this is the Superior National Forest. While the BWCAW
is contained in this national forest, technically the area of
the forest outside the BWCAW could be classified as a side trip.
Superior National Forest: This gigantic 3,900,000 acre
national forest is the heart of the northwoods, stretching from
Voyageurs National Park east to Lake Superior, and south to the
city of Virginia. Nowhere else in the east is there a national
forest as wild or as large. This is the premiere national forest
in the eastern United States. It is home to much of the same wildlife
as the BWCAW, and the largest per-national forest population of
wolves in the lower 48. There are thousands of lakes, offering
vast motorized and non-motorized recreational opportunities. Many
of these include fishing, kayaking, canoeing, rafting and motor
boating There are numerous hiking trails, and even the highest
point in Minnesota is contained within the Superior National Forest
- Eagle Mountain at 2,301 feet. If you are after the wildest place
in the lower 48 in the eastern half of the United States, this
is it.
