The camping set up in Custer State Park is quite
good, and a step above many other state parks. The campgrounds
are well maintained and well chosen for the most part. It defintiely
feels more like a national park system.
Some notable rules for camping and use of Custer
State Park:
1. Camping fees range from $16-$21 a night.
2. When two camping units share a site, each unit must pay the
camping fee(basically a "unit" is anything designed
for sleeping such as tents, trailers, RV's, etc). So extra tents
at one site would have to pay extra. That seems ridiculous and
nothing I have seen before in other parks.
3. Please do not litter.
4. Fires are permitted only at designated sites. Firewood must
be cut to size to fit into the fire rings. The French Creek Natural
area strictly prohibits open fires.
5. Custer State Park does recycle. Place recyclable material in
a single bag and deposit into any regular garbage container. The
park will sort.
6. Fireworks are banned.
7. Metal detectors require written approval of park superintendent.
8. All pets must be on a leash less than ten feet long when in
campgrounds and public use areas. Outside of these areas pets
can be two hundred feet, but under control. Pets are not allowed
in park buildings except if they're seeing-eye dogs.
9. Max speed limit in Custer is 35 MPH. I have found this to be
a very sound rule. A lot of wildlife likes to hang out on the
roads.
10. Only licensed ATV's allowed in park. Travel is limited to
established designated roadways.
11. Quiet hours are from 11 PM to 6 AM.
12. Generators can go from 8 AM to 8 PM, but no more than two
hours at a time.
13. Checkout time is noon.
14. Please do not remove or damage natural artifacts in the park
such as plants, rocks, antlers, historic relics, plants etc.
