Half Moon campground lies at the base of the spectacular Crazy
Mountains in the Gallatin National Forest twenty four miles northwest
of Big Timber, Montana. The Crazy Mountains are an island range
in the forest, towering some seven thousand feet over the town
of Big Timber to the south! They are truly one of the prettiest
mountain ranges in the lower 48. The Crazies are also home to
the rare wolverine, a large elk herd and mountain goats.
Those traveling to Half Moon campground can expect a long, bumpy
ride on gravel roads and a true sense of remoteness. The scenery
is first rate. Big Timber Creek is a short hike from the campground
and offers waterfall viewing and fishing. People who use Half
Moon campground generally do so as a base area for hikes into
the Crazy Mountains. That said, the campground itself has plenty
of fun things to do such as fishing and the scenery is great without
having to hike at all. To get there, take US 191 from Big Timber
north to the junction with Big Timber Canyon Road, and follow
that to the campground. Since Half Moon is a long way from anywhere,
try to get there no later than afternoon on holiday weekends.
It can fill up during those times. Non-peak weekends and weekdays
should not be an issue.
