Important: As of June 23, 2011, Soda Butte Campground
is only open to those who plan to camp with hard-sided vehicles.
It is closed to tents.
Soda Butte is a beautiful and decent-sized campground sandwiched
between the magnificent Absaroka Mountains and the Beartooth Mountains.
It is reached by driving one mile east of Cooke City which is
the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Although
not exactly a crowded campground, it does see some use by those
seeking a less crowded Yellowstone area camping experience. Due
to the location next to the Beartooth Highway (212), you can expect
road noise.
Fishermen will find this a nice destination, with the option to
fish Soda Butte Creek and the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone.
There are also numerous mountain lakes with fantastic trout fishing.
Those interested in a nice spot to set up camp between Yellowstone
and the spectacular Beartooth Pass will find it an ideal camping
location. The close proximity to Cooke City means that supplies
are in no short order. There are some nice sandwich shops in town
as well as gas and snacks. If you want to do some serious grocery
shopping, you will have to go to Gardiner at the north-central
Yellowstone entrance or shop in Billings before driving over Beartooth
Pass.
Visitors interested in photography and wildlife watching will
find many things to like about Soda Butte campground as the area
is incredibly scenic with many choices. Chief Joseph Scenic highway
(296) splits off from the Beartooth highway and also offers jaw
dropping visuals, especially the views of Pilot Peak with the
Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone rushing below.
