There are currently no fees to enter the Gallatin National Forest
in Montana. However, there are fees associated with the campgrounds
in the forest. These fees vary by campground. Please refer to
the camping page for more information on these fees.
Also, some areas may charge you to access them such as day use
areas. An Interagency pass will cover these. If not, fees will
vary on day use area.
Christmas tree permits are $5 a tree, limit two trees per household.
These permits work forest-wide, but avoid campground areas and
obvious places like trailheads. This can be done during November
and December. You can pick up a Christmas tree permit at the ranger
district offices.
Personal use firewood permits are also available, with a price
of $6.25 per cord. There is a four cord minimum and a twelve cord
maximum. You can only take dead and downed trees or standing dead
trees unless specified otherwise. Six foot maximum length.
Image note: This is a shot looking into Big Timber Canyon of the
Crazy Mountains from Big Timber Road. The color in the trees indicates
the fall season, and there is a tinge of snow on the mountain
tops. A very spectacular area in the charming and isolated Crazy
Mountains. One thing I've noticed about this trip is to look out
for cows and porcupines. What a strange combination.
