Glacier National Park's weather varies as much as its dramatic
scenery. Always keep an outfit of warm clothes handy, even in
the summer. The weather can change on you in an instant. A Parkcamper
employee was in Glacier National Park last August when it snowed!
Temperatures upslope are typically 15-20 degrees cooler. Expect
temps to often drop 20 degrees at night. Always pack a windbreaker.
Glacier National Park can be incredibly windy, and the winds can
cut right through the best sweater you have. Typically the east
side is cooler as the elevations are considerably higher. It is
also usually much more windy on the east side.
Make sure you have an appropriate sleeping bag. Many people learn
this lesson the hard way and it can ruin a trip. For the summer,
I recommend a bag rated at +40, synthetic or down. For fall and
spring(this includes late August to November and April through
May) I recommend a quality down bag rated to +20. Often times
the temp ratings on bags are about ten degrees warmer than you
would think. Usually a quality +20 synthetic is good at around
+30 in real world use. Some +20 synthetics are only good for around
+45 at best. It's not uncommon. A good quality down bag will usually
be right in line with its temp rating. In late June, July and
early August you can get by with a pretty cheap bag. Don't try
it in other months though. Also, Two Medicine and Many Glacier
are two thousand feet higher than Apgar and Fish Creek, and usually
much windier. They will almost always be colder.
