Like Yellowstone, Glacier National Park is loaded with "must
see" photography hot spots, and some would say even more so.
Like Grand Teton, Glacier is unusually blessed with outrageous scenery.
The difference is Glacier has even more of it....
Wild Goose Island: This might be the most photographed location
in Glacier National Park. It really is one of the most amazing views
on earth, a giant, natural cathedral.. You can see Wild Goose Island
on the DVD cover and on the entrance page photo. Last fall I had
the treat of seeing two bald eagles fighting in midair over the
lake and island. Unfortunately I was unable to get close enough
for a useable shot. The pullout area can be busy and dangerous,
so keep alert. Located several miles west of St. Mary on Going to
the Sun Road.
Many Glacier Valley: Jaw dropping view after jaw dropping
view describes this area. Just grab your camera and go. All of the
short day hikes offer world class scenery. The area is filled with
lakes, creeks and waterfalls. Try out Apikuni Falls and the Swiftcurrent
Trail, which takes up up several scenic lakes and falls.
Going to the Sun Road: This road starts in West Glacier and
ends at St. Mary, offering 50 miles of "no way" scenery.
Numerous pullouts offer the photographer an easy chance at capturing
the endless views. The landscape changes considerably from the giant
old growth, moist cedar forest near Avalanche campground to the
windswept and stunted trees on St. Mary Lake. Wildlife is easily
seen at Logan Pass, the highest point of the drive. Things to expect:
Glaciers, 1,000 foot waterfalls, knife-like peaks, lakes( Lake McDonald,
St. Mary Lake), rivers, creeks, mountain goats, bighorn rams, mule
deer and bears(both black and grizzly). The Going to the Sun experience
is famous for a reason - it's simply awesome.
Two Medicine: While not as popular as the other areas, the
scenery is still fantastic. Check out Two Medicine Lake, which offers
a different flavor than the other lakes in the park. The trails
emanating from Two Medicine campground also serve as great places
to take photographs. Running Eagle Falls is a worthy and easy 1/2
mile hike just before the uphill slog to Two Medicine campground.
Two Medicine is also good for moose and snowshoe hare photography.
Both are seen in and around the campground throughout the year.
Upper Two Medicine Lake is just as pretty as Two Medicine Lake.
The Northfork: This is a large, less visited area of the
park on the upper west side. It includes the majestic North Fork
of the Flathead, and a series of lakes (Kintla, Bowman). The terrain
has a softer edge than the areas east of the divide. Much of the
area has been burned in relatively recent fires, which can be bothersome
to some. Kintla and Bowman lakes are gorgeous, serene settings.
The North Fork of the Flathead is a must see. It is home to otters,
bald eagles, osprey and a healthy population of cutthroat trout.
This area is also home to the rare bull trout, which can get to
a gigantic size. Count yourself lucky if you see one.
Check out the Parkcamper.com focal chart for Glacier National Park.
This chart shows what focal range we use, and how often:
For those that don't want to haul lenses around, I recommend the
Canon SX10 IS, which is an excellent compact camera. For DSLR, the
Canon 50D is a current top choice. For Glacier, I would pair it
with a Canon 24-105 IS and a Canon 100-400 IS. Bring a Canon 10-22
for ultra wide angle. For Nikon, the D300 is a great camera body,
and for Glacier would work great with Nikon 70-300 VR and Nikon
16-85 VR.
