Colter Bay is a huge campground that basically serves as Grand
Teton National Park's northern hub. Extensive visitor services
are offered, including gas, groceries, showers and laundry. Overall
it's a pretty campground that is fairly popular, offering a fine
family camping experience. Get there by noon for the best campsites.
For those with boats, Colter Bay campground has a robust marina.
Rustic cabins are also available for rental in this area, and
are a neat experience.
Colter Bay campground was our first experience in the Northern
Rockies. We drove all night to get to the park, eager to check
in at one of the cabins for rent next to the campground. The next
morning, we opened the cabin door and entered a world of splendid
alpine beauty - with tall pines, a meadow filled with flowers
and the ice cold peaks of the Teton range towering above it all.
From that point on, we were hooked. While Colter Bay campground
can be busy, the scenery and overall ambiance of the sites tend
to make one forget about it.
Mule deer and their fawns roam the grounds while osprey soar overhead.
Large elk can be heard off in the woods during the fall, and moose
will saunter into the campground in quieter seasons.
Colter Bay campground has modern restrooms. Beware of some of
the lower camping sites on the loops. While they may be prettier,
they can and do flood. There is a risk you could soak all your
gear.
