People could make the case that Grand Teton National Park is the
single best location for nature photography in the lower 48. It's
possible they are right. Why? The wildlife is visible and very
plentiful, much of it rare in other areas of the U.S. The landscapes
are a shock to the system, mostly unreal looking. This scenery
is extraordinary. Pictures do not properly convey the scale.
Every spot in Grand Teton National Park is a good spot for photography.
That said, there are several classic locations for those who do
not wish to venture off the road.
Oxbow Bend: The crowd favorite. If you've ever looked at
an outdoor scenery photo book, you've probably seen shots from
this area. The brilliant thing about this location is you often
get wildlife and mountain scenery in the same shot(moose, swan,
beaver, muskrat). Located 1 mile east of Jackson Lake Junction.
Signal Mountain: Great view of the Tetons and Jackson Lake
from the summit of Signal Mountain. A few miles south of Jackson
Lake Junction.
Cunningham Cabin: Several miles south of the Moran entrance.
Pretty view of a cabin owned by a rancher who had the idea to
preserve the park.
Snake River Overlook: Several miles south of the Moran
entrance. Probably the most popular landscape spot in the park
other than Oxbow Bend. Great view of the slashing Teton range
with the Snake River sweeping through a forested valley.
Teton Park Road: Traveling this road from the Jackson Lake
Junction to Moose is probably the single most fantastic view in
the U.S. park system, period. Words cannot possibly describe it.
There are numerous parking lots along the way to pull over and
take images. Also on this route is the one way Jenny Lake road.
It starts at North Jenny Lake Junction and pops back onto the
Teton road at South Jenny Lake Junction after 5 miles. Jenny Lake
and string Lake are very scenic. Wildlife is readily viewable
from the road as well. If limited for time, make this drive a
priority.
Gros Ventre River: 12 miles Northeast of Gros Ventre Junction
near Kelly up into Bridger-Teton National Forest. Great moose
habitat amid tranquil river. Off the beaten path. Good for shots
not everyone else is getting.
Two Ocean Lake Area: Pretty Lake with rough road in off
the beaten path area. Also known as the Pacific Creek area. Rolling
hills filled with elk, moose and aspen. Turn off for area located
about 1 mile west of the Moran entrance.
Colter Bay to Flagg Ranch: Really underrated area on route
89 filled with conifers and dramatic views of the Tetons and Jackson
Lake. More densely forested. Upper Snake River meanders through
swampy areas. Partly in Grand Teton, partly in the John D. Rockefeller,
Jr. Memorial Parkway which borders Yellowstone National Park.
A good area for getting unique images.
For those that don't want to haul lenses around, I recommend the
Canon Powershot SX10IS as an excellent all around camera. The
Canon 50D is an excellent DSLR, especially matched with the Canon
17-55 IS and the Canon EF 70-300mm IS Nikon offers the Nikon D300
, an excellent camera when paired with the Nikon 70-300 VR and
the Nikon 16-85mm . Using our camping photo gear link on the right
helps us keep Parkcamper up to date.
