Grand Teton National Park is located in the heart of the 18 million
acre Yellowstone ecosystem which comprises Yellowstone itself
and several very large national forests. Needless to say, there
are a wide variety of fantastic side trips if one is in Grand
Teton, although many will find themselves enjoying this spectacular
park so much I doubt they would want to leave during their allotted
time.
Yellowstone National Park: Only six miles north of Grand
Teton National Park. Covered on this site: Yellowstone
National Park An obvious must see side trip from Grand
Teton.
Bridger- Teton National Forest: This gigantic 3.4 million
acre national forest makes up the eastern boundary of Grand Teton
National Park, so a quick visit is very easy. Almost all of the
roads east of Grand Teton are gravel and wind up into the comparatively
gentle mountains and pretty forests. Some of the biggest elk and
moose in the U.S. call this national forest home. I'll never forget
that fall morning, the woods blazing orange and yellow when I
heard giant steps coming towards me from the brush. I quickly
hid behind a large aspen trunk and watched as a gigantic bull
moose trudged through camp, huffing loudly, only to disappear
into the tree line with falling colorful leaves blowing in the
wind. The forest stretches up to Yellowstone and down to the famous
Wind River Range. Fantastic camping, fishing and wildlife watching.
Includes the Gros Ventre Wilderness (317,000 acres), Teton Wilderness
( 585,000 acres), and the Bridger Wilderness (428,000 acres).

National Elk Refuge: A great place to see the native elk,
deer and moose. 25,000 acres of meadows and trees. Lots of other
species of wildlife are also in the area. The refuge borders Grand
Teton on the south. 307.733.9212
Jackson Wyoming: A very cool little town (and very wealthy).
A great place to grab some lunch, fill up on supplies or to do
a little shopping with the family.
Jackson is 11 miles south of Grand Teton National Park. During
the summer season, traffic can be surprisingly bad going in and
out of town from the park. The downtown section is very slick
and well maintained.
Caribou-Targhee National Forest: This huge 2.63 million
acre national forest borders Grand Teton National Park to the
west. Great wildlife viewing, camping and fishing. A different
look compared the the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Contains
two wilderness areas - The Winegar Hole Wilderness (17,000 acres)
and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness (123,000 acres).
