Summit campground is a quaint little piece of land right off U.S.
2 in-between Glacier National Park and the wild national forest
lands south of U.S. 2 in the Rocky Mountain Division of the Lewis
and Clark National Forest. You can't miss Summit campground because
it is marked by a memorial site which pays tribute to the Blackfeet
Nation, Theodore Roosevelt and an early homesteader.
Summit campground sits right on top of the Rocky Mountain Divide
at Marias Pass. Terrain is rugged and the views are sensational.
The campground itself is thickly wooded with lots of privacy even
though it's right next to a major highway. You can expect road
noise and visitor traffic due to the large parking lot which borders
the campground. With this in mind, it is still easy to find peace
and quiet in the endless, deep woods which surround most of the
sites. Summit campground does not offer modern restrooms, using
vault toilets instead. The entrance to Glacier National Park is
only seventeen miles east via U.S. 2 into East Glacier, and then
route 49.

Summit campground. Recently, the U.S. Forest Service has applied
patches to many of the trees in the campground that are designed
to ward off the mountain pine beetle. This pine beetle is causing
a large loss of tree life in the western U.S. forests. These "patches"
are little white squares applied to the trees. You can't miss
them.
