Dalles Campground

Like fishing? Like verdant thick woods? Then you will love Dalles campground in the Lolo National Forest. Dalles is a small but scenic campground that borders the world famous Rock Creek. Needles to say, the fishing is out of this world on this legit blue ribbon trout stream. Dalles is also very close to the neat
29,135 acre Welcome Creek Wilderness. On the way to Dalles campground you may notice a pull off with a suspension bridge over Rock Creek. This inviting trail takes you into the wilderness itself.

Dalles is located south of I-90 on Rock Creek road about 30 miles east of Missoula. Take the Rock Creek road exit south and you will find a pleasant drive through pasture and woodland. Keep alert as this is great bighorn sheep viewing country. There is even a official viewing area on the left side of the road heading to Dalles. Eventually the road turns into dirt as you drive deeper into the Lolo National Forest. The road also narrows considerably with very few turnouts. This area is also loaded with moose. You have a good chance of seeing them here on Rock Creek compared to most places. The sites at Dalles campground are fairly private and very spacious - among the most spacious we have seen in fact. Those seeking river based recreation, especially fishing will be well rewarded here. Those seeking viewing of bighorn and moose are also in for a treat. Many people find the quiet, thick woods along Rock Creek to be one of the better camping experiences in the national forest system. I would whole heartily concur with that.

Image note: This was taken several years ago on one of our first visits to the Lolo National Forest. We were blown away at how beautiful the Rock Creek area was, and enthusiastically enjoyed our time at Dalles campground. As you can see, Dalles is a pretty campground. The forest in this section of the Lolo is a great place to spend some time.
