As you can see form the above picture alone, Porcupine Mountains
Wilderness State Park offers an excellent location for boating.
Four inland lakes and twenty miles of Lake Superior shoreline
make for a watery park experience. Canoes and kayaks are welcome
in the park. There is a boat ramp at Union Bay campground for
larger craft, but the boat has to be registered with the state
to launch if it's powered by motor. You also need a motor vehicle
permit (entrance fee) to utilize the Union Bay boat launch. See
the fee page for costs.
All rivers in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park are dangerous
and unsuitable for boating, especially the Presque Isle portion
of the park. Rivers drop in steep gorges. River bottoms are solid
rock and the current can be very hazardous. One look at the major
rivers in the park will tell you these are best suited for stuntmen
rather than a family looking for a relaxing float trip.
As for the inland lakes, if one had the determination, a canoe
or float tube could be carried into the interior. Lake Superior
presents a different challenge. Conditions can be very rough,
so caution is in order. Kayaking the shores would be an excellent
option. Power boaters have the advantage on the big lake.
