Hiking

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park offers 87 miles of excellent hiking trails over the Midwest's most challenging terrain. Trails pass through old growth forests, waterfalls, tranquil inland lakes and the sea-like Lake Superior. Many people consider the park to be the best backpacking experience in the Midwest. This site agrees. It gives you a glimpse of an old growth, semi-mountain ecosystem with the unique flavor of Lake Superior. The park is also large enough to provide fairly lengthy trips. Isle Royale National Park maybe be considerably larger, but it's not as easy to get to.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is very heavy black bear country. Common sense food precautions most definitely apply. Do not keep food in your tent and try to hang any food items about twenty feet up and away from the trees. Also, people tend to feed the foxes. Some of them have become habituated to people. This usually has a bad ending for the animal. They often get too close due to the repetitious feeding, and end up getting a bit too anxious to obtain that food from your hand. Getting nipped means the fox will likely be killed and tested.
