Union River Outpost Campground is *inside* Porcupine Mountains
State Park along the South Boundary Road. It's fairly small in
size. On the official Porcupine
Mountains map, (here's
a color version) it is known as "Union River",
with a campground symbol below it. The entrance sign to the campground
calls it "Union River Outpost Campground" which seems
to be a basic descriptor for the more remote car campgrounds in
the park. We're going to go with Union River Outpost Campground
for the sake of clarity, and because that's what the sign says.
;) So if you're driving along the remote South Boundary Road with
the official map in hand, the sign that says "Union River
Outpost Campground" is the one you want. You can see the
official campground entrance sign in the photo below.
There are only three sites, but they sit in a pretty woodland
environment. At the end of the campground there is a small footbridge
over the tiny but pretty Union River which has some nice brook
trout. I was impressed with the unique rock formations of the
Union River, and the little pools and small falls. If you wish
to fish Union River, check the DNR
fishing regulations. This is probably a good place
to camp if you want some solitude, although the sites do not offer
privacy as they are completely exposed to the road. I really liked
this campground, with my only complaint being the sites bordering
the gravel road. Also, Union River Outpost is very close to the
Union Spring trail and the Union Mine trail. A good place to set
up base camp for hikes through the countryside. The campground
does provide a vault toilet. Union River Outpost Campground is
just north of Union Spring Trail on the South Boundary Road.
