Side Trips

There are several cool side trips near the Sylvania Wilderness area. The first is Bond Falls(which is pictured above). Bond Falls is a very impressive 40 foot drop located twenty or so miles from Sylvania. Head east on US 2 to Watersmeet, then head north on 45 until you reach Bond Falls road. Hang a right and follow the signs. There's a small parking area and a path leading down to the major falls (a short walk). Definitely worth a side trip. There's some good fishing a few bends downstream of the falls as well. Keep alert on the hike down the falls. It can be very wet and slippery. Those in non-ideal footwear should reconsider.

Another interesting side trip is the Ottawa National Forest Visitor Center:

This visitor center is a great place to learn quite a bit about the Ottawa National Forest and the Sylvania Wilderness area. There are several exhibits showcasing forest resources including wildlife displays. Some of the stuffed animals on display are wolves, coyotes, fisher, bobcat and other denizens of the northwoods. The visitor center also offers information, maps, and other general advice. Well worth a stop to learn more about this part of the northwoods.

The best "side trip" of all though is Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State
Park
which is only 70 or so miles from the Sylvania Wilderness area. The Porcupine Mountains are covered on this site extensively, so check it out.

An important consideration is that this area is surrounded by the Ottawa National Forest. This is a 1 million acre national forest that offers hiking,
fishing, wildlife viewing and other top activities. The Ottawa is a destination itself and will get more coverage in the future by parkcamper.com. The Ottawa is one of the premier Midwestern national forests, falling only behind the Superior National Forest in terms of scenery and available wilderness.
