The Sylvania Wilderness area has one main drive-in campground
and several backcountry campsites. The main drive-in campground
is of a medium size, with the edge sites nestled in some very
impressive forest. The campground offers modern bathrooms and
handicapped accessible vault toilets.
My experience at Sylvania campground was very favorable. The campground
was well kept and beautiful. Some of the sites which bordered
old growth timber were of extraordinary quality. This is a truly
great location for the family interested in a quiet and enjoyable
drive-in northwoods campground. Keep this one high on your list.

The Sylvania Wilderness also offers around 36 backcountry camping
sites complete with fire ring, latrine, pack racks and tent pads.
These sites are $10 a night and require permits. You can obtain
these permits in person by visiting the wilderness entrance station
(you can't miss it on the way to the Sylvania area) or by calling
1-877-444-6777. To reduce impact, only six people are allowed
per campsite, and a maximum of three tents per group. Tents must
be on a tent pad. All pets must be on a leash no longer than six
feet and under control at all times. Fires are allowed only within
the cast iron grates, and collecting of dead and down wood is
permitted. Attempting to gather live wood is breaking the law.
Tin, aluminum cans, glass bottles and styrofoam are not permitted
in the wilderness. Please bring your meals in plastic bags or
hard plastic containers.

It's a good idea to make reservations for Sylvania
Wilderness area backcountry sites when you are planning to visit
the area during the height of summer. Phone reservations will
be taken from February 1 to May 15 from 10am to 4pm Wednesday
to Saturday. Mail-in reservations will only be taken from January
15 to May 15. There is a $10 per site reservation fee. Reservations
must be made 7 days before arrival.
Make sure you get yourself a quality sleeping bag and tent for
wilderness camping. You do not want to get caught in cold temps
or a bad storm without an alternative shelter. For wilderness
camping, make sure your gear is tested and you are familair with
your sleeping bag's comfort rating. I personally recommend tents
made by Sierra Designs or Mountain Hardwear. For sleeping bags,
I like Marmot and North Face, among others.
