Theodore Badlands National Park offers an interesting place to
camp and explore the unique and wild rough country that is the
gateway to the west. At this time, there are no designated backcountry
campgrounds in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, but you can camp
for up to 14 days in the backcountry. To do that, you need a backcountry
permit. For the south unit, you need to visit the Medora Visitor
Center to obtain the permit. You may not have campfires while
backcountry camping. Theodore Roosevelt National Park also offers
horse camping at Roundup Group Horse Campground. There are twenty
sites with horses, and 30 sites without. This offers an excellent
camping experience for those who wish to do so with horses. It
is open May 1 to October 31st. It is advisable that you make reservations
for the horse campsite:

Like with other National Park campgrounds, obtaining
your site is easy. Simply walk up to the campground entrance registration
center, fill out the form, insert your money, tear off your portion
of the envelope (receipt) then deposit the envelope in the collection
box. You then place your receipt on your campground stake (usually
this has your site number and a clip). Some campgrounds in Theodore
Roosevelt National Park operate on a first come, first serve basis,
and some on a reservation system as well. Some of the campgrounds
in Theodore Roosevelt National Park may require you to pay at
a front office rather than with a strong box and envelope system
before you enter them. Gathering firewood in Theodore Roosevelt
National Park is not permitted. Check out time 12 PM. Also, pets
are prohibited on boardwalks, trails and roads at all times. They
must also be kept on leashes no longer than six feet.
