Cottonwood is a pretty campground set along the Little Missouri
River. It's a nice spot to camp while exploring Theodore Roosevelt
National Park for a few days or for a nights rest while moving
on to Yellowstone or Glacier. Most people drive right past this
park without realizing the interesting scenery and large amount
of wildlife the park contains. There is water, but you might not
care for the taste. The last time I tried the water at the campground
it was awful. Bringing your own drinking water would be a good
option.
The campground itself is very roomy and well laid out among a
large grove of cottonwoods along the Little Missouri River. Campsites
are welcoming and spacious. This area seems to contain a large
amount of mule deer, raptors and wild turkeys. Scoping the grounds
with a spotting scope or binocs would probably also reveal a good
population of bobcats.
The campground is also in a relatively good location for exploring
the road system of the park ,which is set up much like guided
tour - twisting and turning through the knobby badland hills.
Cottonwood campground has a group camping site, and you can
make reservations at 701-623-4466. Cottonwood campground also
has modern restrooms.
