Voyageurs National Park offers 150 water accessible backcountry campgrounds! This is an astonishing number of backcountry sites available to those who have a watercraft that can access them. Since Parkcamper.com focuses more on drive-in family camping sites, we have chosen to include two Minnesota State Forest campgrounds that are drive-in campgrounds within a stones throw of Voyageurs National Park. These are Ash River campground and Woodenfrog campground.

Parkcamper.com will be offering video tour downloads of these two campgrounds for those interested in seeing what the sites really look like.

Camping in Voyageurs is one of the more interesting camping experiences in the national park system. There are lakes everywhere. The stars are bright, and sometimes you can even hear wolves howling away at night. This is truly one of the last great remnants of the Northwoods.

Like with other campgrounds, signing up and paying for your site is easy. Simply walk up to the campground entrance registration center, fill out the form, insert your money, tear off your portion of the envelope (receipt) then deposit the envelope in the collection box. You then place your receipt on your campground stake (usually this has your site number and a clip). Campgrounds in Voyageurs National Park operate on a first come, first serve basis, and some on a reservation system as well(group campgrounds1-877-444-6777 ). Some Voyageurs National Park campgrounds near the boat launches can fill by 11 AM, so plan accordingly.

All overnight stays in Voyageurs National Park require a free permit easily obtained at the visitor centers or boat launches. Camping is limited to 14 days at a specific site from May 15 to September 15. Please do not bring your own firewood into the park as there has been a problem with "bad bugs" being transported in bundles of wood. Collection of dead and downed wood (including driftwood) is allowed. Cutting live trees and branches is not. Pets must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet. They are not allowed on the park trails or in the backcountry.
