Voyageurs National Park offers an interesting mix of northwood's wildlife. Much of the wildlife you encounter will be on or near the water. The never ending mix of woods and water make for outstanding wildlife habitat. Moose abound, as well as black bear and bird species.

Grouse: Wooded trails
Wolves: Tracks in winter, deep forests
Moose: Shorelines in low light hours, swamps, meadows
Deer: Everywhere
Bald Eagles: Lakes, shorelines
Osprey: Lakes, shorelines
Otters: Rivers and lakes
Mink: Shores of rivers and lakes
Fisher: Deep forests
Pine Marten: Deep forests
Loons: Remote bays
Lynx: Very rare
Black Bear: All over park

Voyageurs National Park is an excellent place to observe bald eagles and osprey. For photography, you will need a long prime or zoom lens to capture their flight. 300mm on a 1.6x crop DSLR is a good start, with more reach the better. A standard point and shoot will do the job with landscapes, while a 18-55mm zoom on a 1.6x crop DSLR will be more than enough for landscapes. The lake raptors of Voyageurs National Park will be out in daylight. But if you are after some of the woodland birds, search forest meadow edges in low light hours.

A few handy items for observing wildlife in Voyageurs National Park:

Camera, wildlife lens, spotting scope, ultra wide angle lens,
guide to wildlife photography, rain gear, tents and backpacks.
