Wind Cave is home to one campground called Elk Mountain. It sits
in the southern portion of the park at around 4,165 feet in elevation.
Elk Mountain is an outstanding basic campground, one of the better
we have seen on this site. There are flush toilets and water during
the warm seasons, and even a full fledged recycling program -
a rarity in national park campgrounds. To top it off, there is
even free, perfectly cut wood available in the hopes that campers
will not look for wood in the ponderosa pine forests.
The payment system is the much preferred self pay.
Elk Mountain lives up to its name in a big way. Elk surround the
grounds. So do mule deer, pronghorn, prairie dogs, bison and golden
eagles. During the elk rut I was treated to elk bugling right
outside my tent pre-dawn which turned out to be way more effective
than coffee. This is a very pleasant campground, and it is run
very well.
