Five percent of Yellowstone National Park is covered by water -
from rivers to large, quiet lakes. Yellowstone National Park offers
a great deal to someone who is interested in boating. A permit is
required for all watercraft in Yellowstone National Park. It's a
$20 annual fee and a $10 seven day fee for motorized watercraft.
For non-motorized watercraft, the annual fee is $10 and the seven
day is $5. Permits can be obtained from the West Entrance, northeast
entrance, Mammoth backcountry office, Bechler Ranger Station, Canyon
backcountry office, Old Faithful backcountry office, south entrance,
Lewis Lake campground, Grant Village backcountry office, Bridge
Bay ranger station, and the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce.
A wearable floatation device is required for anyone wishing to
boat in Yellowstone National Park. There are plenty of good reasons
for this. The park waters can be very rough, and powerful storms
can whip up at any time. You won't believe just how big Yellowstone
Lake really is until you see it in person. It's very impressive.
Other park waters like Lewis Lake can also be surprisingly rough,
and can have a good current due to proximity with rivers.
Motorboats and rowboats can be rented at the Bridge Bay Marina
as well. Also, Grand Teton National Park permits are accepted
in Yellowstone National Park, although you still must obtain a
free permit.
For those seeking a boating experience, you are definitely going
to want to stick to the southern half of the park ,which contains
the largest lakes such as Yellowstone Lake, Shoshone Lake, Lewis
Lake and Heart Lake. Extensive canoe and kayaking trips can be
planned around those bodies of water. Yellowstone Lake is big
enough to support cabin cruisers as well.
One thing to consider while on Yellowstone Lake is that the water
is incredibly cold, and any wind can quickly turn a day on the
water into a freeze-fest. It's a good idea to keep a small backpack
with you while out on the lake with a warmer jacket or pullover,
as well as a hat and gloves.
