Canyon is another very large Yellowstone National Park campground.
Its location is central to the park, which makes it a much shorter
drive to the various attractions, but also makes it a busy campground
and area in general. Canyon campground is very close to the Grand
Canyon of the Yellowstone, one of Yellowstone National Parks most
famous features. It's easy to get up before sunrise and take the
short drive to the Yellowstone viewpoints before the crowds arrive.

of a mall, information center and gas station

Other than the close proximity
to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Canyon also provides short
trips to Mt. Washburn, which is a fantastic wildlife viewing area.
Just to the south is Hayden Valley, another great place to see
various kinds of animals from wolves to grizzly bears. Just west
of Canyon, the parks geothermal features begin to pop up. In short,
Canyon provides a very central location to many park activities.
This makes it the choice for many Yellowstone visitors.
The only downside to Canyon is its popularity. Some will
find this comforting while others will find the atmosphere a touch
too congested for a national park experience. There are several
very nice stores at Canyon Village which is great for convenience,
but at the same time also might give the appearance of being a touch
too overdeveloped. Regardless, Canyon campground is a great place
to stay, and is undisputed in being *the* central location in the
park.
