Mammoth campground is just a few miles up the mountain from the
northern Yellowstone National Park entrance. It's a very dry campground
and quite busy. This area of Yellowstone National park falls under
a rain shadow, and a short drive reveals much different terrain.
Mammoth campground is also very close (just down a hill) from
stores, restaurants and a gas station. Mammoth campground provides
modern bathrooms and easy access to the famous Mammoth Hot Springs.
Elk are often seen in the Mammoth common grounds just a short
walk from the campground.
You will often hear motor vehicle noise at Mammoth campground
due to the main park road that passes right by the area. Also,
the campsites seem a bit tight, especially along the eastern end
of the campground. The sites farther back in, tucked under the
ridge offer more breathing room. This is often the place people
end up at when the other campgrounds in the park become full,
or when the other campgrounds close for the season. Even though
it may not be the prime camping destination, it offers a decent
place to camp with outstanding views of the surrounding mountains.
Amenities are many, and this may be a good choice for those wishing
to camp as close to civilization as possible in Yellowstone while
still exploring neat features like the Mammoth hot springs, the
easily seen elk and some pretty good fishing in the Gardiner river.
