Norris campground is centrally located in Yellowstone National
Park and offers a good spot for those planning to visit many of
the most famous features in Yellowstone. Norris is a relatively
short drive to Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Hayden Valley,
Dunraven Pass, Old Faithful, Yellowstone Lake and Madison Junction.
Trying to visit all of those locations while camped at Mammoth,
Indian Creek or Slough Creek would involve much more driving,
thus taking up a good chunk of your rare and valuable trip time.
Norris campground provides modern bathrooms.
Important: Norris campground has been closed
to tents and tent campers for an undetermined time in 2010 due
to grizzly bear activity.
The elk viewing(and hearing) can be very good at
Norris. Keep alert at morning and dusk when near meadow areas
and you will often spot some of the giant Yellowstone elk. There
are a couple cool thing that give a unique ambiance to Norris
in this writers opinion. First, the whole campsite appears to
be on some sort of pine covered mound in a sea of meadow. Secondly,
the Gibbon river and Solfatara river both make some beautiful
twists and turns right near the southern border of the campground,
creating an idyllic setting. Occasionally, those fishing or just
sitting by the rivers at sunset will find themselves accompanied
by a giant bull elk. Norris is also a good place to hear wolves
and coyotes howling at night. The elk like to bugle in the fall
, day or night - which will jolt you awake from a deep sleep real
quick. In fact, the bugling you hear on the Yellowstone camping
dvd was recorded at 2 AM in Norris a couple falls back.
Norris is definitely one of the top campgrounds in Yellowstone.
People also appreciate the drop box registration and payment system
which reduces congestion.
