Tower is a smaller campground located in the northern portion
of Yellowstone National Park. Tower is a good area to see black
bears and bighorn sheep. It also provides a central location to
visit the Lamar Valley, Dunraven Pass and the Grand Canyon of
the Yellowstone. Tower Creek offers scenic fishing if you like
rock climbing. Tower campground does not offer modern restrooms,
but one of the nicer stores in Yellowstone National Park is very
close to the camping sites, just down the cliff.....er I mean
hill.
Ok, so Tower smells like sulfur and only has 32 sites, most of
them contained on a small hill which is accessed by driving almost
vertically on the campground road. The bathrooms are very basic,
just outhouses. There are buckets provided on the picnic benches
for putting out your fire. Everything feels very homely for Tower
campground....... But don't feel too bad, because it's actually
a good campground for tenters. In fact, it's one of the better
centrally located sites in the park for those who wish to pitch
a tent.. It's also pretty quiet too. I often see people ending
up at Tower because they couldn't get a site at Slough or Canyon,
and who don't want to drive back to Mammoth. If you want to tent
camp in a reasonably central location, but don't want to spend
the night next to an RV, Tower is a fine place to camp. It's lofty
position also makes for spectacular views of the night sky, which
in Yellowstone have to be seen to be believed.
