Yellowstone National Park is at the extremes in terms of weather.
It can snow any time of the year. Always bring a pair of warm clothes
and rain gear in the summer. Night time temps will be much cooler
than day time temps, as opposed to the hot muggy nights at lower
elevations in the eastern U.S.
The average elevation in Yellowstone is around seven thousand
feet. This means that it will be colder than other places when
it's cold, and that you are closer to the rays of the sun, increasing
chances of sun burn. Keeping hydrated in the high mountain west
is essential. Dehydration can make you feel "off" for
an entire trip, or even send you to the hospital for an IV. Make
sure you are consuming plenty of fluids.
If tent camping, a good sleeping bag is essential. I recommend
a +40 degree bag for the summer (mid June to mid August), and
a +20 down bag for late August to November, and for April to early
June. It can snow any time in Yellowstone, so always bring a hat,
gloves and long underwear if tent camping. Being prepared will
save you from an uncomfortable trip. Yellowstone is best enjoyed
in comfort, as is anything else. Don't let the weather ruin your
trip. Part of the park splendor is the outrageous weather you
can encounter at all times of year. It's a force of nature than
can cause awe and command respect.

Avg max high/low temp:
January: High 28.6, low 9.6
July: High 79.6, low 46.7
September: High 67.8, low 37
