I'm a new camper and will be going to the northwoods in June and Peru in August -- can I use one type in both places?

What will the weather be like? Similar? If so, you should be able to use the same tent.

I have only camped in summer, so we did not need anything to warm up in colder weather. Plain regular tents worked just fine.

I'd suggest camper. Nothing more nothing less. Try it first of course since we might have different experiences. For me camper is for everywhere else.

You can definitely use the same tent in both places. I'm a big fan of convertible tents that can be "pushed" into colder seasons by zipping up panels. See the Mountain Hardwear Hammerhead 2 as a good example.

Yeah well, I too would like campers but only on certain places. Tents for me are still the best in camping. Though of course I find campers easy to bring since, well, guess its appearance speaks for it self.
