I live in Vermont! We go camping in the national forest--it's free. In our area its called Somerset. There are numerous sites through out the woods that are all opened--with fire rings. You can go out and stay on a site for 2 weeks. Then you don't have to leave somerset but you do have to move to a different site, just because they don't want the land to settle with all the camping stuff sitting on it.

I absolutely love it out there. It is patrolled by the fish and game department and occasionally the Sheriff's go up in there. So, I always feel safe out there.

There is a few different fishing ponds out there and a river that runs through it.

We go there every summer, usually a few times during the camping season. In the winter time it's all snowmobile trails. It's just amazing that it's free.

What about you? Do you go camping on any free sites? I would love to hear about some free sites on the East coast.

I don't know of any free camp sites in NY (in my area) All state parks are pay sites. Your park sounds fabulous!
We usually go to the camp grounds. I love these. It's safe and there are a lot of fun things to do! We fish, hike, bike, have campfires, play volleyball and just have fun!

I have camped in campgrounds before and they are fun, but I have to say I enjoy camping in the woods more. We do not have electricity or even water. We go to the stream to wash up. If we stay for longer than 3 days---than I have to take a trip back home to take a shower..LOL We only live about 20-25 minutes from where we camp--so we can quickly come out of the woods--clean up and go right back to the woods.

I don't have any actually. Just want to thank you for sharing this. You may not believe me but its the first camping site that I've heard its free. Furthermore, it seems safe with the sheriff checking things. I'll definitely check that one out. Thanks. If I discovered other free camping sites I'll share it.

There are a lot of free sites in various national forests, but they tend to have less development such as "pack out your own trash", and no trail cutting. Usually these have an outhouise of some kind, sometimes not.

I envy you for living in a place with such an amenity. Is it open or free also to campers who are not from the vicinity?
